Hipsters, doodles, and oodles of noodles

So, came the weekend. It was the usual head scratching moment where we didn't know what to have for lunch. All I was thinking of, "Please, no more Antipodean Cafe.." and we had a launch to go for at 2pm around Bangsar. We decided to have lunch around the area. So, Julian suggested Canoodling.

Canoodling, walked passed it many times but never had the interest to give the restaurant a try. Why? Because I don't really give Chinese restaurants a try. I don't fancy eating high class noodles. For me, noodles must always be paired with hawker stalls because there's no way I would pay RM20 for a bowl of noodles.

BUT Canoodling proved me wrong.

20

Canoodling is a casual yet snazzy noodle house serving a large variety of Pan-Asian bowl food; from salads and main dishes, to small bites, refreshing drinks and Asian-inspired desserts, all at affordable prices.

21

11

A familiar looking chinese exercise book, along with a few printed sheets of paper and a folded menu were handed to us and inside each of them are a variety of rice, noodles, desserts and drinks to pick from.

18
14

We placed our orders and while waiting for our food to arrive, began noticing how quirky the place looked, brightly painted yellow walls, decorated with hanging pot lamps, amusing illustrations about noodles written on slate walls and right in front of us, a can of multi-colored crayons for us to doodle on a white mahjong paper table cover. So, being me, I doodled.

12

Soon after, our food came and we were all equally satisfied with how good the food looked and tasted. The right word to describe Canoodling's food is exotic. Take for instance, the Crispy Duck Salad that I ordered.

7

Crispy mesclun leaves and pineapple chunks, tossed with orange dressing, garnished with coriander and spring onions. Took a bite and every taste buds I had literally craved for more. The duck was really tender. The leaves tasted zesty and sweet which came from the pineapple and orange dressing and it was just perfect! I have never tasted such a delicious Asian salad in my entire life and I am definitely heading back for more. All that flavor for only RM12.90!

9

The hubs had a try with their Dry Curry Chicken Noodles at RM13.90. I had a taste of the curry, and it was delicious. Light with santan but full of curry goodness, it was really good.

10

Julian ordered a bowl of Braised Beef Brisket Noodles at RM14.90. I didn't get to try the beef but had a spoonful of soup. Soup was actually pretty tasty and light. It didn't have that overwhelming beefy taste which is good and they were pretty generous with the meat. Meat was tender and yummy, according to the hubs because he had a try.

8

Overall, everything we ordered was pretty amazing. Well, except for the side dish that Julian wanted to try. Tempura Kangkong at RM5.90. There wasn't any Kangkong taste, except for the oily tempura batter. So, only if you would like to eat flour all the way, else I would advice you to give this one a miss.

Right after Canoodling, we went straight for the launch of Bazarro, Loaded Inc and Unity Store KL. It was a pretty interesting launch because the owners personally flew a group of lion dance performers from Hong Kong for the event.

It brought back memories of Chinese New Year when lion dance performances can be seen all around Kuala Lumpur. Shopping malls, offices and homes will celebrate CNY by having a group of lion dance performers dancing in front of their entrance to welcome this auspicious time of the year. It is for good luck.

Lucky people! Although I am blogging about this awesome event, I WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT. I am super jealous at those who will be partying with crazy mixes by international vocal powerhouse and EDM (electronic dance music) siren Eva Simons, Jakarta’s cult-status DJ Angger Dimas, as well as Kuala Lumpur’s fast-rising electronic dance nu-breeds B.A.T.E. (Brain And The Eye). The night will charge on till the end with the hard-hitting, hipster-worshipped duo Mr.Nasty & GuruGuru (a.k.a. Bass Agents).

RAYA break

Did exactly what a lazy person would have done during the long break. All I did was sleep, eat and shop. Yup, the entire four days I did exactly the same thing each day. Super productive. I realized that the longer a holiday is, the more I spend. Basically I spent my entire one month's worth of expenditure in four days. Probably am exaggerating here.

SATURDAY - spent the day in Midvalley, lunched at TGIF, met a friend for coffee, caught Total Recall. Still can't get over the fact that Kate Beckinsale is crazy hot. The movie was surprisingly good. I had my doubts because I didn't like Colin Farrel after watching Miami Vice but he redeemed himself in Total Recall. How can someone be so hot? Seriously?!

1908-9

Bought a couple of sandals from Cotton On. Two pairs for RM60. Wanted only one pair but the price did not make sense. One pair at RM59 (??!). Anyways, ... can't remember what else I did after that.

1908-1

SUNDAY - went over to Departure Lounge at Damansara Uptown for lunch. Wanted to check out the place, I heard they serve breakfast as well. DU looked like a zombiefied town. Absolutely no cars, shops were closed and the place was deserted but Departure Lounge was opened so, whoopdeedoo! The place was crowded, not surprised. People here tend to go crazy over breakfast, no idea why. Me included.

1908-2
1908-3
1908-4

Anyway, concept is quite good. They have travel photos and books as decor. It does feel as if customers are waiting in a departure lounge.

1908-5

For breakfast, I got to choose what I wanted by ticking this piece of paper. What is good is that customers get to pick what they want instead of having the set fixed. Reasonably priced as compared to other restaurant with breakfast menu.

1908-8
1908-7

BUT taste wise was nothing compared to Antipodean Cafe. What you pay at Departure Lounge is exactly what you get. Portion was a little small, quality was not there, it wasn't bad but just not great. With a minimum of RM19 at Antipodean Cafe, you get so much more in portion and everything tasted better as compared to paying RM13 for a plate of OKAY breakfast. Won't be traveling all the way to Damansara Uptown for this anymore.

1908-6

As for the coffee, the cup of cappuccino that came.. I didn't like it at all. The coffee tasted funny. At RM9, I could have gotten a good cup of cappuccino at Antipodean Cafe. I only took two sips and the hubs had to finish it for me.

We then went over to IKEA to check out their wardrobe prices and fixings. Planning to get my wardrobe room done soon because I have no place to hang my clothes anymore and they are duplicating in number each shopping day, to the point where they are now stacked on top of each other.

1908-10

Bought two tops from The Curve Flea Market (what did I tell you about having more clothes each shopping day), chilled at DOME for a while and met up with a couple of friends who happened to be watching a movie there.

1908-11

The hubs was playing with the functions in my camera, and this came out pretty good. Took this shot with defocus. After having this camera for more than a year, only realized I have this function on that day. =_=

Went to Midvalley from The Curve to get dinner and catch The Expendables 2 with Chuck. OMG, there was no room for anything female. It was blasting testosterone explosives all the way. Super can't stand that aunty looking fish lip actress. Stallone, if "you'll be back" for the 3rd installment, please put aside a bigger budget and hire a chick next time, kay?

MONDAY - stayed at home. Watched a couple of dvds. That's about it.

2108-1
2108-2

TUESDAY - went to Antipodean Cafe (yes, again) for lunch. Went home. Decided to check out Magic Mall (Paradigm Mall) in the evening. Had Peri Peri Catch at Fish & Co. Not too bad but prices went up by RM6! It used to be RM9.90 for a plate of what I ordered but now it is RM15.95. Damn!

2108-4

After hearing tons of bad things about Paradigm Mall, my verdict of it : not that bad. In fact, the place is actually better than Tropicana Mall, Empire Shopping Centre and SS2 Mall! There are tons of food outlets, plenty of things to see, the design of the place is much nicer than the other malls I have mentioned, the lift worked well, no air conditioner unit falling from the ceiling, Starbucks looked fine..I guess those are just marketing efforts to get people curious about the place.

2108-3
Mojo all snugged and comfy on his usual sleeping couch

Four days just passed by like that and we are back to our usual working routine. Ah well, life is life.

A little Sun, Scotch & Vanilla Cigar

My second day in Penang begun with a step out on my room balcony which overlooked greens of tree leaves, Shangri-La's pool and just a little distance further, the good ol' sea that I've been waiting to see ever since I got to Penang 24hours earlier.

1
17

Shangri-La was surprisingly packed with guests from different parts of the world after being told the night before that there was low occupancy level that week. As I walked through the pool area, heading towards the beach bar, I took in the sight of children laughing and splashing in the pool, couples sun tanning, families spending quality time with one another and the joy of it started the first half of my day on a cheery note.

3
5
4

We lunched at Pinang Restaurant, which was the same beach bar that we checked out the night before. Their menu varies from western to local delights. Their local dishes are more towards Penang delicacies and I was pretty excited to see that Loh Bak was in the menu! The last I've been to Penang was when I was 18 and Loh Bak is my only favourite food in Penang. So, to have this was already pre-planned. I just didn't know when and where but seeing that it was available on the menu, I placed my order and that was my lunch!

6
Chicken Loh Bak at RM12.

Surprisingly, the best Loh Bak that I've tasted so far and I thought that it came in such a big portion for such a reasonable price. A bowl of sweet and sour chilli sauce to dip in which was flavored with diced cucumbers came with the dish. The outer layer of the Loh Bak was crispy and the meat was juicy on the inside. Lovely combination. I will definitely head back to Shangri-La for this in the future.

7
8

The hubs ordered Club Sandwich and Lionel ordered a bowl of Caesar Salad. The sandwich was packed with slices of grilled chicken breast and the salad had generous topping of crispy bacon.

2

Being a 5star resort, I have no doubt that Shangri-La offers great coffee. It does not surprise me that their Cappuccino carries great flavour.

9

Right after lunch we went for a walk and came across Chi, the spa at Shangri-La. So, we headed in to have a look.

10

I love how the walkway was lined with bamboo trees on each side. The lobby was softly lit and light music was playing in the background. Felt rather peaceful while I checked out their rates for their spa services.

12
11
13
14

They have individual rooms catered for guests during spa sessions to remain a certain level of privacy which I really liked! I place great priority in feeling totally secured while getting a spa treatment and I am sure others feel the same way too.

15

After touring the spa, we headed straight for the beach. I was looking forward to it because I've watched on Travel & Living on Astro that the beach along Batu Feringhi is quite nice. Unfortunately, I found that the sand was pretty rough, which was a feeling I was not used to. With the number of east coast visits, I didn't like how it was grainy and pokey under the feet. So, we didn't walk much on the beach.

We had the thrill of watching a mother and son parasailing because the father was trying to soothe the daughter who was crying so loud for her mother on the beach and I think, the daughter might have had the idea that her mother was flying away from her and never coming back. Lol

18
19
20

Soon, the hubs had to leave for a car photoshoot. So, I sat myself down, facing the ocean, with Sidney Sheldon The Stars Shine Down to accompany me throughout the day. When I mentioned previously that Shangri-La had excellent service and they are always one step ahead of every guest needs, one of the staff brought me cold towel when I was a quarter through my book. I felt so unbelievably pampered by the hotel.

Rain droplets were seen on the pages of my book and that was how I know it was going to rain! Towards my left, the sky was pitch black and it was really threatening to rain hard. So, I grabbed my belongings and headed back to the room where I continued reading on the balcony with a cup of self made Nescafe coffee to keep myself warm. There and then, my life couldn't be more perfect than it already is.

By 5pm, I started getting ready for the night. It was time for Johnnie Walker Black Circuit and I was glad I pre-planned my outfit. Usually when I pack for a vacation, I tend to bring more than I need to wear because I am fickle minded like that. All set and ready to go, we reached Penang's Turf Club at 830pm and it was already packed!

21

There's a bar counter by the entrance which served two pretty amazing mixes. The two English bartenders made two different drinks. One was infused with Vanilla Cigar smoke and another was mixed using a teapot. Got to say that the drinks were so much better compared to the previous JW Brazil.

22

I was so surprised that the people in Penang literally came early for this event as compared to the people in KL who only arrive after 10pm, usually. It was a totally different setting than the previous one that I've been to. Being in Penang, I would have thought that I wouldnt be bumping into any familiar faces but it was as if the whole of KL was there! Met a friend whom I've not seen since high school. Saw Naomi and Tim. Saw Ringo as well but I was alone when I saw her and didn't occur to me to snap a picture with her. She looked so pretty in her outfit. Hannah Tan and Oli Pettrigrew were the hosts of the night. Regretted not having a picture with Oli! He is so good looking!
